The Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase of the Atkins Nutritional Approach consists of an increase in carbohydrate intake, but remaining at levels where weight loss occurs. The daily carb limit, from 20 net carbs on Induction, is increased each week by 5 grams. A goal in OWL is to find the "Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing" (CCLL).

The Carb Ladder

OWL is the most significant phase of Atkins that is often overshadowed by it's strict counterpart, Induction. Unlike Induction however, the OWL phase introduces the dieter to more low-glycemic foods during each "rung" of the Carb Ladder

Mission

The mission of OWL is to reintroduce some of the Induction restricted foods of Induction into the dieter's life and allow them to eat more carbs a day. OWL's secondary mission is to slow the weight-loss process down to a healthy level.

The OWL phase lasts until weight is within 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of the dieter's goal weight.
